History of 3D computer aided drafting (CAD)

The founding of 3D computer aided design (3D CAD) can be attributed to several companies; however, none more important than Manufacturing and Consulting Services, Inc. (MCS). In 1986 MCS changed CAD / CAM software's direction in the mechanical engineering industry by introducing a fully integrated CAD / CAM software, that was able to run on both engineering computers as well as personal workstations. Today 70% of all 3D mechanical design software can trace its roots to MCS's original 3D mechanical design code. Through the evolution of CAD / CAM software the founding in 1995 of a company called SolidWorks would again shake up the industry.

SolidWorks became the first 3D design software available in a native windows environment. Since SolidWorks founding it has continued to impress industry professionals with innovations that allow users to focus on the design of 3D products and not the 3D design software. SolidWorks CAD software has been accredited with helping over 80,000 companies in more than 100 countries. SolidWorks CAD and other mechanical design software has grown rapidly into the industry leader and developer of CAD products such as:
